The Feldenkrais® Method

fi_10The Feldenkrais Method® developed by Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais uses gentle, dynamic movement and directed attention to improve mobility, coordination, and balance. This method improves your ability to move with precision, power, and ease.

“I have long been intrigued by this subtle form of retraining the nervous system, which I recommend to patients whose movement has been restricted by injury, cerebral palsy, stroke, fibromyalgia, or chronic pain. I find it to be much more useful than standard physical therapy. I also believe that the Feldenkrais Method® can help older people achieve greater range of motion and flexibility, and help all of us feel more comfortable in our bodies.”         Andrew Weil, M.D. Author of Spontaneous Healing and Natural Health, Natural Medicine

The Feldenkrais Method® is based on principles of physics, biomechanics, neuroscience, and the study of human motor development. Feldenkrais recognized the capability of the human brain to learn and relearn at any age – neuroplasticity. The method utilizes slow, gentle movements, and awareness of subtle differences to optimize learning, improve movement, and make changes in the brain.

“Feldenkrais is not just pushing muscles around, but changing things in the brain itself.”        Karl Pribram, M.D. Stanford University (Winner of the Havel Prize in Neuroscience)

In an individual Feldenkrais session the practitioner uses delicate and precise touch to gently guide you through slow subtle movements which increase your awareness of your body and the dynamics of your movement in the gravitational field. By doing the movements in this way brain is primed to discover more optimal ways of moving.

In group Feldenkrais classes the teacher verbally guides students through gentle movement sequences that the students perform on their own.  Learn about my Feldenkrais classes at West Point Grey Community Centre and online via zoom.
